Some finishing touches to some L&T structures...

Well today I decided to start finishing off some of the structures that are just about completed on the L&T Branch.

First project was to install and paint the awning that sits over the loading dock of the storage warehouse.

Next project was to add a loading dock door, entrance door & windows to the Chemical Transfer Facility.

Gravel & Ballasting Progress...

Laid the gravel today on storage area, this is just plain roadside dirt sifted into extra fine & fine (HO Ballast grade) and secured with white glue/water.

Checking the track is clear of stones and ensuring the rolling stock will free roll...

Ballasting around the Chemical Transload Facility...

Ballasting work has also been continuing around the Chemical Transload Facility...

The white styrene strip will be removed once the glue has dried, it was placed there to stop the ballast sticking to the loading dock and to allow a small gap so that the building backdrop can be removed.

Latest L&T Industry gets started...

I have begun the latest industry to take its place on the L&T, well started the ground cover for the rear storage yard anyhow...

This section is for loaded or unloaded cars to be stored at the rear of the premises until ready to be pulled from the industry.  The area will be fenced off for security and will resemble a non used section of the property.

The ground base is a mixture of Patching Plaster, Portland Cement & Fine Vermiculite.  It is mixed with water to a consistency resembling "sticky mud".  It is then worked into the area and track with a small putty spatula, styrene strips and fingers.

Once the rough level is established I then spray a little water over the area and smooth out with a wet finger, the track has the excess removed and the remaining water is soaked up with a old cotton t-shirt.

More Piping for the Chemical Transfer Facility...

This afternoon sore me complete the pipe work for the chemical transfer facility.  This will feed the manufacturing plant all of its liquid, solid & gas chemicals for the various processes within the plant.

There will be three distinct tank car spots for loading & unloading (1x loading, 2 x unloading) and a dock for dry & solid goods, drums of liquids via box cars.

Next stage will be to paint & weather the unloading/loading racks, pipe and storage tanks.

Colourful Chemicals - Another new L&T Industry...

Well the next structure and industry to be constructed on the L&T is a Chemical Transfer Building, this structure is associated with the Appliance Manufacturing Plant and will transfer both solid, liquid & gas chemicals to the various areas within the wider manufacturing plant.

It is located on the spur that leads to the plastic pellet unloading shed, and will hold two to three tank cars.  There will be an unloading rack with various points for different chemicals and as such will make switching crews have to pay attention to their spotting of the right tank car to the right unloading point.

The small building front will be for unloading of solid chemicals from box cars onto the unloading dock.  The building itself is again another Walthers - Modular Kit made into a building flat.  The photo backdrop for the industry has already be chosen and works in really well with the surround backdrops and area.

More weathering with Oils...

Tonight I installed a Peco -  Hayes Style Bumper on the L&T, it was painted last night in Reading Yellow and weathered tonight using Oils (WN - Raw Umber).

I also did these Tomar - Hayes Style Wheel Stops, same deal Reading yellow as the base followed by weathering with Winsor & Newton - Raw Umber Oil Paint...

Having way to much fun doing this now!

I've found the Holy Grail, well Oil Paints & Washes for Weathering...

Tonight while doing some airbrushing I decided whilst waiting for the paint to dry I'd have a go at doing some washes and oil paint weathering...

Now I have been researching the Internet & YouTube the last few days getting pointers, but for a first go man I'm impressed by what can be achieved by using these.  I've basically started out just doing some dirt runs, rust spots and runs, tire marks & wear marks and some highlights on timber.

This has been achieved with just three colours, Lamp Black, Raw Umber & Titanium White this was based on Jappe's advice when he did his loading ramp thread.

The building that was done was the Stamping Plant...

I've officially caught the bug of weathering now, I just have to control the urge to want to do more and concentrate on completing the L&T.  Now that the weather here is coming into the colder months it can be the inside/night time project...

More Concrete & Weathering...

Today as part of the mega airbrushing & weathering session I also managed to get the concrete area around the stamping plant painted & weathered.

I'm really beginning to like the effects and weathering I'm getting from using the powdered chalks & isopropyl alcohol washes.  I've also begun using some dry brushing using oil paints too, but this is only very small things presently till I get the hang of it.

Two more weathered buildings & ready for detailing...

Had an extremely productive day today and finished off weathering another two buildings for the L&T.  They are now ready for windows & doors and final detailing...

Things a really flying at the moment and the vision is starting to take a firm hold in this area, I find myself more intensely looking at more things to ensure that each section is relating to the last and that continuity is consistent too.

Adding a simple view blocker for Photo Backdrops...

After a suggestion from one of the guys from MRH, I tried adding a simple truck & trailer to the layout to act as view block for the new photo backdrop.  The one leading off from the road created a skewed viewing angle from the left hand side (won't be viewed from this position as its above my workbench) and it has worked perfectly for blocking it and as an added bonus created a ncie little scene element...

This is the angle from the original photo but with the inclusion of the truck & trailer...

And from the original front on view with the truck & trailer...

The addition of the truck & trailer has worked perfectly, turning in was better than turning out as I could plausible place them closer to the edge near the backdrop.  Also I needed to hang the rear of the trailer out a little so you don't loose the angle of the photo backdrop that actually works well...

Testing begins for the Photo Backdrops...

Well tonight I printed out the various buildings & structures that I wanted to use for the photo backdrops.  At this stage they are all in black & white, and have not been altered in any way (yet) till I get the viewing angles and size right.

I clearly have to print some of these on A3 as even A4 wasn't big enough for some of the structures to look right.  so was the concept right and did the Photoshopped version prove to be right on the layout, as it looked from the renderings?
