Painting the Ground Colour...

Tonight’s mission, painting the ground with some earthy colours.  This time is just some old house latex paint, called Sandbank.

Doesn’t have to be anything special, just something to hide the starkness of off-white masking tape.

This seals the tape and direct layer above the timber sub-roadbed, will hopefully limit any stray Ballast Bond or other liquids used when fixing scenery, and if there happens to be small gaps of scenery showing, well it looks sort of an earth colour.  It also gives the scenery some tooth to adhere too.

Next stage will be to add any contours or raised areas of ground using strips of cardboard, again covered with masking tape, and finally ground goop (I explain if I use it)some final zip texturing and then static, grass, bushes, shrubs & trees.

    1. It's part of the process from Joe Fugate when he did his terrain building that I've just kept using. Instead of plaster sheet & plaster over cardboard strips. It gives the ground goop (plaster, Portland cement & vermiculite) something to bond to, also stops moisture being wicked through into the sub-roadbed, and/or failing between any gaps and onto the Staging Deck below...

  2. That makes sense. Have you seen mesh drywall tape? Same purpose but with a stronger adhesive and is less expensive. It is what Rob Spangler uses in his scenery construction. I plan to do the same.

    1. I have seen & used mesh drywall tape, I used it on the joins in my drywall backdrop, not one crack after eight years.
I haven't seem Rob use it on his layout, I must have a look...

      Thanks Alan...
